System hangs ALL THE TIME! Help! Post a Reply
From: Keith on 07/09/1999
I have an HP Pavillion P-366, 32MB RAM, Win95. It hangs up constantly. Everything just freezes, including the mouse. It doesn't seem to matter what I am running, but it seems to occur more often while surfing the web using IE4.0. Sometimes, it freezes gradually. In other words, windows close slowly or partially and the mouse still moves around, then the mouse will move and I can click buttons, but they don't respond, then the mouse usually eventually freezes also and I have to reboot.

When it first starts happening, I do a soft boot and "end task" on the nonresponding program, but it freezes on something else until I have to do a full reboot, go through scan disk, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

: A quick solution is to go to control panel then click display, then settings then click on Advanced. Take the graphic accelerator to 0 or none. If this fixes the problem then your answer lies in the RAM. In this case go to settings and task bar menu. Click remove to as many problems as you can. You will not lose the programs even though it says "do you want to send to the waste bin? You will have to open the programs from explorer. These 2 steps will almost certainly sort it out for you, Kind regards,

Check to see if your microprocessor's cooling fan
is working properly, if not, replace. I had
a similar problem, and a ten dollar part stopped
the freezing up of the system.

Not sure how old your computer is, but it sounds like you may have a RAM problem. Has it been happening since you got it?

Maybe the RAM has come loose out of it's socket?

Check your control panel - System - Device Manager and see if any hardware is having problems.

How long has it been since you re-installed windows? That fixes a lot of problems. Maybe now is the time to upgrade to 98, it fixes a lot of problems that never got fixed (for free that is) in 95.

I found that Nuts & Bolts' "Bomb Shelter" really works wonders on saving you from crashes. As long as you use it to only save a file then get out and re -boot.

It's better to get a system to a point that it is useful to you, and leave it alone. Meaning not add new stuff or upgrade programs, because it seems every time I add something new it screwes up something else.

ALso, try some of the standard stuff, like a virus scan and run some sort of disk checker, and see if the System File Checker says anything (type in "sfc dll" as a search term here for more info).
