Windows 98 udate sight says I have error Post a Reply
From: Terri on 01/19/2000
Hi.. I have no idea how to fix this, I called Microsoft and AOl, they both told me its not "their" problem.
Before I dowloaded Aol 5.0 and the Browser 5.0 I had no problems going to the windows 98 update paige. Now When I do get there the screen comes up that says one moment while windows examins your system to see what updates I need, but instead of the updates comming up, I get a error reading: "The lexplorer has made a fatal error at WUV3IS.DLL and then it lists a ton of numbers ( all which mean nothing to me! )
The only other changes that I can think of is that I got a scanner and a printer for Christmas ,.. I dont know if that would have anything to do with this or not? I sure hope you can help me.. THank you so much..

MS and AOL, what a combination for trouble. You need to get a real ISP that will help you. Someone that doesn't have billions of people calling every day and that might spend the time helping you. AOL is slow (think about this, you have to go through their servers to get to the net, how smart is that?), and there's no reason to use them to get on the internet, most ISP's will walk you through setup.

To try to solve your problem, it sounds like the wuv3is.dll file didn't download correctly or has become corrupted somehow. Use "find" (start menu) and find the wuv3is.dll file and delete it.

If you have a program that removes DLL's, then use it. If you want to get more complicated, go to your start menu, click "run" and type in the following exactly:

regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system\wuv3is.dll

The regsvr32 program will remove the DLL from the system, and this may sound silly (but we are talking about a MS product here) but doesn't delete it. You have to delete it yourself. If that isn't stupid enough for you to want a new OS, I don't know what is. (see corel.com for a new OS)

It's better if you use a program that is made for removing DLL's.

To make everything right, you could get rid of the Windows Update Folder, you can find it in the "Programs Folder".

If you can get the latest win98 CD (second edition) it has a lot of patches on it. You would think someone as RICH as MS is could make a offer to upgrade people. I hate patches.

Another thing, why did you feel it was necessary to do a update anyway? It doesn't really fix anything much, and the system still crashes daily like it always has.
