Crash several times daily; diagnostics OK. Post a Reply

Can anyone help? I'm wasting hours every day.
This PC running Windows 98 is crashing at irregular times but several times a day for the last weeks or months.

It is using Photoshop 5.5 and Painter 6 regularly, but the crashes occur even when they are not running. Recently Painter 6 crashed even when it was sitting quietly in the background.

Norton's Utilities (a recent version before 2000) System Doctor and Win Doctor find nothing. Nuts and Bolts found nothing. SDRAM is now 256MB but crashes date from before, when RAM was 128MB.

The machine is less than a year old, and is called AT for Advanced Technology. Genuine Pentium III chip. Display hardware: RIVA TNT2 Model 64; 32 MB; BIOS Version 2.05; integrated RAMDAC.

Thanks

I would have to just say that painter 6 is a bad product, and I don't think corel has any commitment to
keeping it a quality product, I would suggest going back to version 5 if you can.

: The same computer is refusing to go on standby when not being used, and reports "your computer cannot go on standby because there is a driver or program preventing it from doing so." Is this related to the crashing problem? How do I find what "driver or program" is causing the crash.

: A full surface scan of both hard disks was performed and no problem was found there.

: The computer is connected to the mains supply via a UPS.

: Sometimes it is Windoes Explorer that hangs. Sometimes a new program such as a virus checker. BHut there is no pattern that I can see.

: Any expert advice, please?

: Thanks.
