fatal exception (OE) has occurred at 017F:BFF9DFF Post a Reply
From: Daniel on 10/21/2000
I am wondering if anyone has experienced the following error message with the Windows 98 2nd edition operating system which also has on it Office 97 Professional edition.

On boot-up, on a random basis (ie: about 1/3 of the time), I see the blue windows screen and a message which says: “the volume that was removed had open files on it. Next time, please check first to see if the volume can really be removed”. At this stage, I’m asked to press any key to continue, which I do, and then I get the following blue screen message: “the file system mounted on the volume had data that needed to be flushed. Some data on the volume was lost. Next time, please check first to see if the volume can really be removed”. At this point, I am again asked to press any key to continue which I do. At this point, I receive a message, which says: “a fatal exception (OE) has occurred at 017F:BFF9DFFF. The current application will be terminated”. At this point, if I hit any of the keyboard keys, I get a black screen with a white message referring to one of the startup items listed in the Close Program Screen (ie: the screen you see when you hit Control+Alt+Delete).

At this point, I have to shut off the computer and re-boot, but if I reboot in normal mode, I will get the same error message all over again. So, I’m forced to boot into safe mode, and once booted-up, I open up the msconfig program and uncheck the checkmark in Start up so that none of the start up items will load, and then I re-start the computer and can boot up successfully. At first I thought that one of the start up items was conflicting with another one of the start up items, but I am inclined to think that this is not the case because I’ve only had a few start up items loading (which I don't think are the cause of the problem) and have still gotten this error message.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what this error message means and what the problem could be?

i have pentium iv processor,128mb ram, hard disk(2 nos)totally 80gb.i have installed my os in drive d:.iam currently using win98 second edition.when i bought the system, sometimes the system hangs during boot up(ie) it will get into the desktop but both the mouse and the keyboard doesnt work.this happens only at sometimes.one day windows didnt boot up and the command prompt only appeared. i took the ram cleaned it and put that in the slot and windows properly booted.again this problem occured ,i removed the ram and then reinserted.recently while i was working for long hours with the computer ,i got the error "error writing to disk d:" and when i restarted the computer i got the error "insert proper boot device and invalid system disk".i performed full scan of c: and d: and there were no errors .but when i inserted the ram again the problem solved temporarily. i thought it was ram problem and bought 256mb 266mhz ram ,formatted the system, installed win98 again.I get a execption saying" a fatal error has occured "... in a blue screen at some address and the system hangs.apart from that i get errors like igfxtray "this has performed illegal operation and will close" ,when i have 256mb ram.errors of these have not appeared when i was using 128mb ram. i then removed 256mb ram and now using only 128mb ram.even if i use both the rams i get errors and the system hangs.plz advice me regarding this problem.awaiting ur reply eagerly.

yeah iv got the same problem... this sucks. could someone quickly run by what a promise driver is for me please? is this as in, a particular make of harddrive or what?

also has anyone else found memory to be the culprit? that would kinda make sense here, seeing as iv pretty much given my entire system an overhaul and the only thing not changed is the memory

I've got the same thing happening....

Did goggle search and someone seems to think that Microsoft has an updated Promise driver that will fix this problem....

I'm researching now....

I get FE errors OE at 017f:bff9dfff on a seemingly random basis with a frozen system at times. It seem though through trial and error that it is related to some combination of USB devices. From what I have found It only occurs with my devices plugged into a hub(interx powered 4 port). I currently have 2 hubs, and will need to investigate if the microsoft hub built into a internet pro keyboard causes the same problem when my UPS (cyberpower 1100avr) is plugged in.

If you have a Promise ultra 66 or 100 hard disk controller, it has a driver problem, MS has a updated driver, try it out.

Look for it at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

I received similar error: Fatal Exception at 01B7:BFF9DFFF, but have no clue as to what could be wrong. I will monitor this message from time to time.

I also had the problem

"A fatal exception OE error has occurred at 017F:BFF9DFFF" but managed to fix it by testing my RAM chips on another computer. One of them was dodgey and as soon as I replaced it my computer started working again fine.

Hope this helps

Does anyone have the file or files discussed on http://www.windrivers.com/tech/tips/may99/index.htm because it has gone to a subscription service and I can't get to the suggested article.

Thanks,

U da MAN! This patch worked great for me. My failure was about 100% on bootup, but I dual-booted into W2K, found this patch, applied it to my W98 C: drive, and haven't had a glitch since!

Thanks a bunch!

Joe

: I believe this problem is due to the Promise disk controller. I have been researching this problem and actually have a web page dedicated to it. Visit:

The other reply looks good too, but could have been booting up with a bootable cdrom in you drive, on a bootable cdrom, the boot code shows up as drive a:, moving your normal floppy to b:. This may be the missing filesystem in question. For instance the 98 cdrom if left in your cdrom drive will give you a boot option, leaving it alone will continue to boot up from the harddrive as normal, make sure you havent left that cd in your drive, also try Norton Disk Doctor for DOS, it fixes many harddrive MBR and FAT problems.

Well, it looks lke Windows thinks you have removed a filesystem that it was using- This could be the result of a failure to detect a removable media device following an abnormal shutdown (loose cable or card, hardware failure, that sort of thing), or perhaps removing a zip disk fron the drive before windows closed all the files on the volume.

Questions you might want to find answers to: did anyone recently remove a slave disk drive or a zip drive or a CD writer or some such item from your system?

Are there devices physically present that Windows can't see This could indicate a missing or corrupt driver, or some connectivity problem.

The Fatal Exception would seem to indicate a driver problem, but any of the above COULD cause such a message, so the first thing I'd do if I were you is check to see if Windows can't see a device you have. If you find out that you have a slave HDD or ZIP drive, but Windows can't see it, try re-installing it according to the manufacturer's instructions.
