crash city w/ windows me, geforce 2 and athlon 110 Post a Reply
From: dollheads on 10/27/2000
just received the pc a couple of days ago and, due to a registry "glitch" that wouldn't allow internet explorer to open (opened only a pop-up ad and the version could not be uninstalled) i was walked through (by gateway, the manufacturer) a formatting/re-installation. from there i had proplems with the system crashing out quite often, but with no error messages, just a lock up. i reformatted again, with less software installed and updated the drivers for the vid card, but still it crashes more than i expect even a windows os to crash. i haven't a clue what the problem could be (and neither does gateway) and i've no hair left now to rip out. please help

Ok. I have never written on a bulletin board, but now I feel compelled. Last year I bought MSI 6195 board, Athlon 650 Processor & ASUS 6600 GeForce card. I have had nothing but insane problems!!! Finally it is becoming quite well known that there is definitley an issue with the Athlon/GeForce combinations. The problem however is NOT the card nor the processor, nor even the heat (although I agree those GeForces run hot and need to be properly cooled, especially w/ Athlon) but the problem in most cases is the CHIPSET of the Motherboard. First of all I would like to know what board you are running and 2nd if anyone out there has further helpful info regarding this issue, I would love to know how to make the damn thing work w/o just having to call it a loss and buy new hardware. Hope this helps.

: Ok, i build pc's for a living at comdoctor.net and
: i place 2 case fans with each 7200 rpm drive. A hot drive can cause errors, especially if its stuck with another device above it(ala floppy).
: put atleast one case fan blowing right on the 7200 rpm drive.

: : guess it might help if i gave some more specs:

: : 256mb 133mhz sdram
: : 64mb nvidia geforce 2 ultra gts
: : 40gb 7200rpm ata100 hd
: : sound blaster audiopci 128d

I'm having the same problems with mine system.
I have the asus a7v mb with 27 gb harddisk, creative 3d annihilator, 1.1 gh athlon procesor. Also only durin games it will crash totally till a freezing screen with sound, or it will crash back to the desktop. I tried almost anything, different drivers etc etc. It freaks me out!!!

: I have the same problems =/
: with lock ups, trying out all drivers I can get me hands on for the geforce2gts 64MB and the VIA chipset but no joy yet ...just did a format took win ME off put win 98SE on still the same hmmmm

: locks up in win DVD 2000
: aliens Vs predator GE
: Grand prix3
: mechwarrior3
: F22 lightning 3

: and some other games I have,it starts off fine then after a few minutes the screen gets stuck and the sound keeps on going on the last sound b4 getting stuck...er Quake3arena and half life play ok
: as for heat i`ve no case on with a 22inch fan blowing cool air in...a bit overkill none the less but worth a try =)

: I hope someone finds the fix...i`m stressed out

: I'm in the same boat, my brand new Athlon (only 1 GHz) with a 40gig 7200 RPM, 32 Mb NVidia GeForce 2 MX only freezes up on anything that uses the video card (a.k.a. games and graphical winamp plug ins)

: At least I'm not alone

: : I have a very similar situation and am getting fed up. I actually work for Gateway and this is a computer I ordered for myself. I haev a nice set up:
: : 1100 Mhz Athlon
: : 32MB GeForce 2 GTS/PRO DDR
: : 512 MB PC133 RAM
: : 40GB 7200 RPM HD

: : I am going to take a look at what the gentleman said regarding hard drive heat. I have heard of conflict problems with the Athlon and Geforce2 line but I believe they would be much more prevalent if the situation were truly serious. The game locks up and you hear the last sound over and over until you are forced to manually shutdown all power. It could be the vodeo card or heat getting to video card or processor but it seems very likely that it could actually be the hard drive as locking up is surely something that could happen with the hard drive. My only question is why the hard drive does NOT EVER lock up when doing basically ANYTHING else but games? IF it were the hard drive heating up then it seems it would lock up undermany different conditions....not JUST on games as it does on mine and these other folks'. Thank you!

: guess it might help if i gave some more specs:

: 256mb 133mhz sdram
: 64mb nvidia geforce 2 ultra gts

: sound blaster audiopci 128d

: : just received the pc a couple of days ago and, due to a registry "glitch" that wouldn't allow internet explorer to open (opened only a pop-up ad and the version could not be uninstalled) i was walked through (by gateway, the manufacturer) a formatting/re-installation. from there i had proplems with the system crashing out quite often, but with no error messages, just a lock up. i reformatted again, with less software installed and updated the drivers for the vid card, but still it crashes more than i expect even a windows os to crash. i haven't a clue what the problem could be (and neither does gateway) and i've no hair left now to rip out. please help
