winword has caused an error in winword.exe Post a Reply
From: Layne on 06/02/2001
I am running Windows ME and while working in Word 2000 when I click on "Tools" on the menu bar I get the erro message "winword has caused an error in winword.exe".
I have unistalled the program and reloaded several times to no avail. My computer is a Pentium 3 with 128 meg Ram, and 20 gig free on the hard drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Feb 29, 2004. I have Millenium Edition of Windows and have been using Microsoft Word2000 for 4 years with no problem. Suddenly after 4 yeats I'm experiencing the error message "word will close now" EACH and every time when I'm logging off the Microsoft word 200 software. I have deleted NORMAL.dot several times with now help. I have NOT installed any new peripherals. I re-installed the WORD several times with now help.
I feel empathy for each and all of us with this problem.

Copy Normal.doc from another computer on to the machine with problems allow the copied .doc file to overwrite the existing file. This should eleiminate your problem.

KenE,

Nice work. I had the same problem, it drove me nuts for two days. I de-installed and re-installed the printer (taking your advice) and it works fine now. Good call.

Todd, you are fantastic! For two weeks we had people come haere andwe spoke to experts and this one knows all about computers and so on and so on...but deleting the Normal.dot file was THE REAL,EXCELLENT ANSWER!!!
THANK YOU!!!

first thing is to show all hidden files:go to my computer either view or tools icons at top of page,go to folder options, click on veiw tap at top put dot in to show all hidden files and remove check from hide file extensions click apply and ok close my computer.then go to start find or search depending on your os.files and folders.do seach for normal.dot delete all that come up close the searh window.now go to start run type in regedit, the system reg will open, click on the + sign by hkey_current_user then click on + by software then go to microsoft click on the + by microsoft.the go to office click on that + look at what you have in there you should have 10.0 or 9.0 if you have both chose 10.0 you should see a word folder click on the + beside it you should see a data and options folder delete both of theses the restart your computer.you should be able to open word from there good luck

: Hello,

: This is what worked for me. I went to http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

: And I used the option on renaming the Normal.dot file to Normal.old When I first tried it I could only read the title Normal There was no Normal.dot So I renamed it anyway. Then I realized that I had to go to folder options and unselect hidden pathways. I then realized I named it Normal.old.dot I went in and erased the .dot All is working well for me now. I hope this helps anyone else.

: Michael

::Thanks a lot Michael. I did what you and the website said, and everything worked out. Thanks a again!::

I am running win98 and office97 on HP Vectra series 4 and when I opens a word program file it opened but I have this message ' Winword caused a general protection fault in module HP0win05.dll at 001f:000087ao. When I closed the dialog box, the Word application also closes.
Please what can I do to rectify this. It seems my word application is corrupt. Thanks.

: I have the same problem but could not fix it anyway. The only way i opened is,first select it and then press SHIFT while it is opening it so I can override the macros or auto hidden virus scan process and then it will work fine. You can save it as reguler but need to go thprough the same process when closing it.Hit close sign or exit and keep the shift down till the word programe exit without any error.
: Hope this helps if anyone need to use Word right away without having to fix it first.

This is a nice and easy solution to this problem. I had the same problem being: Word 2000 wouldn't start and kept coming up with the error "Winword has caused an error in Winword.exe. Winword will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer"

Well the solution is nice and simple.

Using your search option under "Start" search for normal.dot Rename this file to normal.old (Do this to all files you find with this name)

Now restart your computer and then try opening Word.

This fixed my problem hope it fixes yours.

Cheers

Thanks Ken,

Thanks for the help...that may help the others and if so that's great, but ufortunately it didn't help me.

I'm running Windows 2000 and Office 2000 (Word 9).

I was getting the Winword.exe error and then a crash when I tried to save a file and close. The file would close okay but when I tried to close Word itself I would get the error message and then the crash.

I finally realized it had to be a template problem. I think I fixed it.

The How To:

Find the template file that is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup. Click it. (For me it was the PDFMaker.dot. Then drag the template file to the desktop to test to see if that is the probelm.

I didn't, but you may have to Restart your computer.

Start Word, run the same set of events that would deliver the error message. Hopefully, no more error message.

For me it was that #$%^^## template file. Now thinking back...I used it once the other day...and then I had problems. I always (except for that one time) make my PDFs the long way by printing to postscript and then distilling with my own settings.

Bill Gates...clean up your act!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Personally....I love Adobe products!

Hope this helps someone else.
Kathy

I too tried all the fixes.

Hello,

This is what worked for me. I went to http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm

And I used the option on renaming the Normal.dot file to Normal.old When I first tried it I could only read the title Normal There was no Normal.dot So I renamed it anyway. Then I realized that I had to go to folder options and unselect hidden pathways. I then realized I named it Normal.old.dot I went in and erased the .dot All is working well for me now. I hope this helps anyone else.

So I've been going round with this a couple days.
A tech at Dell told me this is a common problem.
Somehow winword.exe gets corrupted. He suggested
eraser2k as a second choice(note: if you had works
installed on the computer that would have to be
erased first).

First choice:
This guy was not real clear about what actually
caused the problem. Since Office doesn't really
clean itself out when un-installed, here is what
to do.... Uninstall Office completely. Then
delete the Office registry keys and reinstall.
Haven't tried it yet but he seemed quite confident.

I have a system running Win2000. I get this error when ever I try to print to HP Deskjet 672C. I also get a protection fault whenever I try to send anything to that printer. It functions fine on a network printer but not this one.
I cannot find any file named [normal.doc]on this system.
I've reloaded Office 2000 two times. I've deleted all the printer drivers and had Win2000 find a driver [Microsoft solution] Still it won't print.

Guess what? I have the same problem. Since getting my new 1.3Ghz Athlon running Windows ME with Works 2001 and Word 2000 pre-installed I have lost 3 documents and get the winword.exe message (one of these was 32 pages long). It only appears when I try and re open the doc.

I managed to rescue the docs by opening in wordpad and cutting and pasting into a new word doc. Then saved it in Rich Text Format instead of a word doc and all was well, although without all the macros etc.

I agree with Ricardo that there seems to be a prob with the Normal template, maybee something to do with it saving a version of this in windows profiles.

After getting the error message and unsuccsesfully trying to open it on several occasions I did a ctrl, alt, delete and about 7 winwords were running in the background.

Whats the official Microsoft verdict I wonder?

Good luck everyone I'll leyt you know how I get on.

I haved worked tech support for several of the top computer companies. I am also A+ certified by comptia.
In most of these cases its a virus thats causing the trouble. If you havent yet run a virus update and then a virus scan on your hdd. You might want to check your anitvirus websites for more info.

I repaired it many many times after I got the error message and word closed on me, still not working. I just thought about this site and read one of you guys note and I deleted my HP DeskJet 842C printer then reinstalled it, (I installed it as a network printer because I have a small network at home, 2 pcs running win98 and one running w2k) and it kind of fixed my winword problem. At least when I reopen the Word, it stays and allows me to work on it. I can even open the attachments from my e-mails. Thanks guys. Take care.

We just ran into the same issue here at work. We are running a Win2K network in which a segment of our users are mapped to a ricoh 350 printer copier. Errors ranged from DrWatson in Win NT, to database errors to the winword.exe error in Win 2K. Started to blow away all printer. Issue went away. Had no problem installing printers until reinstalling the Ricoh Printer. Then the errors return. Recently the drivers where updated to the 6PCL, and this is probably what is causing the current issues with out users.
Hope this helps.

2. Then go to start to find to files and folders. under named type normal.dot make sure your looking in drive c. delete the files it finds .

3. Go to start and run type regedit

4. go to hkey current user click on the plus sighn then click on the + for software then the + for microsoft / the + for office / the + for 9.0 / and then the + for word delete the data and the options folders , close the registry and reopen word.

you aren't seeing the extension because the default setting in ME is to HIDE EXTENSIONS, and SYSTEM FILES.

Double click MY COMPUTER, go to the pull down TOOLS, and thgen OPTIONS or FOLDER OPTIONS, depending on your version, go to the VIEW tab and select SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS, and de-select HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS.

You can now see the .dot. Be careful, because they hide all the important files to keep slap-happy folks from deleting their system files. But how can you fix them if you can't see them?

Now try uninstalling Office, re-booting, and re-installing Office. It will not delete your documents if you use only the control panel uninstall routine. Do the same with your printers. Delete them all and re-install them.

Normal is the same file I used (the ".dot" didn't show up for me either). As far as access denied, make sure that WinWord is not open when you try to rename it. If no luck, I would try some of the other solutions on that microsoft webpage I referenced earlier.

Good luck again.

I deleted the printer driver and reinstalled it, restarted the computer and get the exact same error every time I try to use Word. Did you do anything else that might have helped?? Been working with Microsoft tech for 2 weeks with no results.

O.K. check this site out....it worked for me with the same problem-

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q236/3/19.asp#ScopeCause5

About two thirds the way down the page there are some fixes. The one about changing the Normal.dot file worked for me. You do a search of on the C: drive for normal.dot
Then rename it oldnormal.dot
THAT WAS IT!!!! GOOD LUCK

Well - I fixed it but I still don't believe it !!!

I tried installing OFFICE2000 Premium Service Release 1, convinced that this would sort it out..... SAME PROBLEM!
Then I started de-installing everything : IE5.5 / NORTON / etc, etc down to bare-bones.... Just WIN98SE and Office 2000....SAME PROBLEM.

As a last resort, I started deleting devices/peripherals/cards ......

And here is the solution : !!!!!.........

********************************************

* DELETE your PRINTER/S and re-install !! *

I suspect the problem was caused by installing the printer -before- I installed Office2000... if that makes sense to anyone....

However - I am happy to say that WINWORD no longer crashes !!

I HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU TOO !!!!

Cheers

: I'm sorry to say I have the same problem too...! And I am NOT a newbie ....! This is driving me NUTS !!!

: I'm running an AMD Athlon, 128 Mb RAM, 60 Gb WIN98SE.

: (Proves the problem is not platform dependant)

: Everything was just fine, until my IBM DeskStar HDD crashed. I re-installed Windows 98 SE from scratch, then the mainboard, 3DFX, sound and other drivers, and finally Office 2000 Premium.

: All the other Office applications work fine .... just WINWORD crashes every time I open it !!
: I've tried just opening WINWORD and doing NOTHING... still crashes ! I de-installed completely, re-installed, and even tried running the Repair utility twice. Still crashes !!!

: I've checked the May2001 Microsoft Technet for possible causes - nothing !I've checked support.microsoft.com - no help at all...

: Tonight I'm going to start de-installing software until I get to the bottom of this ... WATCH THIS SPACE !
