Re. Win 98 crash when starting Word2000 Post a Reply
From: Stepney on 06/22/2001
Found similar problem with word2000 on win98. All the files open ok except word files which cause word to hang. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del results in a message- "System is dangerously low in resources. Would you like to terminate the following application? Winword [Not responding]"
Reinstalling Word has no effect. System file checker reports user.exe file as possibly corrupt.

Any ideas? Thanks.

The search for normal.dot (not necessarily case sensitive) has worked for me multiple times. It's good advice
and clearly there's some problem with Word as used on Microsoft ME operating system. The last time
it happened, however, I had no normal.dot files come up when I searched. Yet searching for "normal"
I got two. I deleted the both and the problem disappeared--so try normal when normal.dot doesnt work!

Win98 + Word2000 = "System is dangerously low in resources. Would you like to terminate the following application? Winword [Not responding]"

Followed Kristy's advice with success

Many thanks

AWESOME!! I've been using FrontPage to create documents and WordPad to read Microsoft Word documents :) You saved my life. But I was also wondering- how did you possibly figure this out?

I had the same problem except I am running WindowsXP and Word would close as soon as I hit the file menu, and tried as I did I could not find a normal.dot, but as I had just about given up I noticed that on the tool bar to change asked if I wanted to change it as a normal.dot so I searched under files and folders, and checked hidden files and there it was normal.dot deleted it and word works perfect..Thank You, Thank You
:
: I had almost the same problem as you but I have Windows ME. My computer would freeze when starting Microsoft Word 2000. After many hours of headache, calling tech support to be charged $40 and the problem still not fixed, I am happy to say I fixed it myself! It was so simple, I could not believe it. Try this to see if it helps you. Go to search, for files or folders, type in Normal.dot, search and see what normal files you have. Rename each one such as Normal to OldNormal.dot or Normal1.dot, etc. That solved my problem! Kristy

: : : :Thank you, Kristy! You're a goddess. I had exactly the same problem (with Word 2000 using Windows 98SE). Nothing I tried seemed to work: eliminating startup programs, reducing icons on the desktop, killing files to free up space, the repair program for Word. I simply could not open Word. Period. The system would freeze. I had to do a Control-Alt-Delete and reboot.
: : : I just now tried your posted suggestion and Voila! And Word comes up faster than ever.

: : THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I spent 3 1/2 hours today trying to figure this problem out. Needless to say, Microsoft was of no help. I downloaded patches, installed and reinstalled Works, all to no avail. My boyfriend spent hours yesterday talking with tech people and trying to find a patch. Then today, he found this web site and all our problems were solved in 5 minutes! YOU ROCK!!!!

Yeah. Don't use outlook for mail. use the United States Postal Service. They seem to be nice people. Use your computer for playing solitaire. That seems to be the most stable Windows program.

Thanks so much for posting your solution. Wish I had seen it before spending several hours.

I must be the only one curious as to how you figured this out! Or else everyone else is too polite to ask.

How in the world did you??

I can' thank you enough for this solution. I am in graduate school and almost resorted to running out and spending hundreds of dollars on a new office suite in order to finish a paper I have due. THANK YOU!!!!!

: Spent a full day with this described problem, which began with the inadvertant ingestion of an online worm which required downloading a patch and scrubbing of everything. Once all was clean, encountered the same hangup described above. Reinstalled Windows 98, reinstalled Microsoft Word, all to no avail while trying to reaccess Word.

: Reviewed above messages but could not find any Normal.com. Eventually found just "normal" on 2 files, changed the title, and VOILA! My point: the "normal" need not be case sensitive, also there need not be a .com tag.

: Everlasting thanks to all who have labored on this stickler heretofore by a grateful and exhausted 82-yr-old!

Kristy,

You truely are a Goddess! Thank you for sharing this information. I owe you dearly! I had exactly the same problem and it had costed me already 1 1/2 day figuring out what was going on. Full uninstall/reinstall of Works, Office, Norton Antivirus, RegClean, scanning the MS knowledge base and fixing with all available patches did indeed not help at all.

But now it's time to rock and roll again and my brother is so happy to be 'Word'-ing again.

Thanks, Merci, Gracias, Dank U wel!

There is something definitely abnormal about Normal.dot. As suggested, I renamed those turkeys and that solved my problem. Many thanks. Tito
