Computer freezes CONSTANTLY (mainly in games) HELP Post a Reply
From: Ryan on 07/12/2001
I have just built a new computer, and all drivers are updated to the best of my knowledge. Here are the components:

1.33 GHz AMD athlon thunderbird cpu
Asus A7A266 motherboard
(2) modules of crucial 256mb DDR SDRAM ECC, unbuffered
MSI Starforce 815 Pro (Geforce 2 Pro, 64mb DDR)
SB Live sound card
Kingston 10/100 ethernet card
cdrom, floppy, CD burner
razer boomslang mouse
dell quiet-key keyboard
4 speaker surround sound Cambridge speakers and woofer

My system is my dream system, just recently built, but it LOCKS UP all the time! I just recently updated the bios, ive updated video drivers, because I thought the vid card was the problem, but then i switched to my old video card and the system still froze. Mainly happens when im in a game, and sometimes happens out of games. If anyone can help PLEASE reply or email me at rgc79@home.com!!!! Thanks!

Do you think it has anything to do with using unbuffered RAM?

welp, it's 2004 now and im starting to get the same exact symptoms these guys were having. random lock-ups during games, i cant even get the friggin thing to boot anymore without restarting itself. (you would think it was a heat issue, but ive checked everything.. it's all in the normal temperature range.) no doubt the batch of motherboards were probably defective.

i think it's time to upgrade, lol.

I had the exact same problem. Everytime I would log into a game, it would hard freeze. I replaced every componet with a different one for troubleshooting purposes. It turned out to be the onboard sound. I disabled onboard sound in the bios, and installed a new sound card. Everything working fine now. I hope it helps.

Wow, I am so surprised to be hearing these comments. I have been dealing with these issues for more than a year. First it was with a tbird 900 on some ching-chang mboard. It was my dream system at the time. Couldn't make the thing run for more than 20 minutes. I designed new coolers, used multiple multiple hard disks, video cards, etc. etc. etc. Boxed it up, threw it in the closet. Went back to my old PII 450 Dell. Sometime last year I decided to try it again. I never can give up on solving a problem. A couple of weeks into it, all my hair was gone, my eyes were bloodshot, I didn't sleep, and was really drinking alot. I bought a new processor...a 1.2 GHz T-bird. Guess what...no change. I bought a Gigabyte GA-7ZX mboard. Guess what..yep. It still crashed, and like most everyone else...during games. But there were many times I'd leave the system running and come back to find a locked up screen saver or desktop. Over the past year (maybe more) I have built these two systems. Used about a dozen different HDD's, 5 video cards both PCI and AGP, multiple sticks of RAM, etc, etc. It's been an amazing horror story. I've been building machines since...well, my first was an 8088 with a 30 meg HDD. I've seen it all, usually fixed them all too. But this one has really alluded me. Just wanted to throw in my two cents on this one. It's nice to know that I can share my pain with others and that there are people out there who can feel exactly as I do. Oh yeah, don't think I mentioned it earlier. Most video cards I have been using were GeForce 256's, TNT's, etc. Thanks for listening.

I have same problem on a W2k system an it is an USB problem :
USB devices may draw a maximum of 500 milliamps (mA) per connection. If a device attempts to draw more than this, the specification calls for the ability to disable that specific port until the system power is cycled (this is called "suspending" the port). In addition, if the device draws less than 50 mA, the port never becomes active
and the boomslang work with 48 mA - if there some workaround please let me now

: : I have the exact same setup and I get this all the time. Doesn't anyone know what this is?

: :
: : : : turn on your computer and do a time test, see if it freezes around the same timeframe. Do you have a good heavy duty cpu fan? Overheating may be the cause. Try running the machine with the case open. Good luck!

: : : The freezing is random. Almost always while in a game. Sometimes it takes a few min, sometimes an hour or more.

: : : And yes, I have a heavy duty fan and heatsink. =/

: : : I have exactly the same problem with random freezes in games and I also have an ASUS motherboard (VIA APOLLO KT133 A7V-E). Do your games emit a high pitched tone from the speakers when it crashes, cus mine does. I've replaced all my fans (processer, graphics, main heatsink)which has done nothing. Finally I have got the latest mb drivers from Asus.com but this hasnt helped. Personally I think its a fault in the ASUS motherboards.

: Has anybody tried talking to a somebody high up in ASUS (eg. customer services manager)

Athlon processors and GeForce cards have major problems together. I have read however(I am going to try it today considering I have the same f-ing problem)that you may want to remove a stick of memory to bring you down to 256MB. I am assuming that you are running Windows 98 or ME. 98 and ME are not designed to deal with alot of RAM since they are for the home user and when you hit the 512mb mark or anything after that it doesn't really help performance and can actually hinder it. This may sound whack but I have read in 2 other instances that this worked and when I called the manufacturer of my card they suggested it as well. Sometimes to much memory CAN be a bad thing especially in the case of running games on 98 and ME. Most games these days are nowhere near needing anything over 256mb to run smoothly so unless you need to do some hardcore computer animation you may wanna give this a try. You can also go into msconfig and set the amount of memory you want your computer to use rather than physically removing the sticks. Run msconfig then on the line that says: Limit Memory to MB Substitute x for whatever amount of memory you want to use. Might as well try it.

I also want to add that even though your motherboard may support memory up to 1.5ghz or more that doesn't mean that having 1.5ghz is a good thing. If you are running NT maybe but not 98, ME, or even 2000.

2 things come to mind right off hand. Try lowering the APG apeture size to minimum or disabled and look nfor a program running in the background called devldr16.exe or devldr32.exe, if one of these is there close it and take it out of the startup

I have the exact same problem and I contacted asus, however,I still haven't recieved a response. I think it is a defect because I also have a heavy duty fan, actually two fans. I had experts examine my computer(several experts) and non of them know the answer.
