NT 4.0 OleMainThreadWndName hangs on shutdown Post a Reply
From: Eric on 08/04/2001
When I try to logoff as user or to shut down my NT 4.0 workstation (service pack 6), the PC first hangs, and then (probably after a time-out) displays an error message that OleMainThreadWndName is not responding. After clicking "end task" the whole process may repeat itself several times.

Looks to me like its an issue with LANDesk - at least on the box I'm dealing with.

Check this out:

There's also the same type of bug with earlier Norton Antivirus 7. Search for it on Symantec's site.

I am getting ye OleMainThreadWndName when attempting to log off a few of my NT4 servers(SP6) I end task a few times and it goes away. But while this thing is running the server thinks its shutting down.

I have checked the registry and services. The only change I have made recently is installing Symantec AntiVirus 8.1 and recent hotfixes.

Thanks for the solution folks.

Recently I had installed MarkVision on my PC to manage Lexmark printers on the network.

I went through the services as described:
Control panel -> Services -> click startup for each service to see the options for that service...

I found the ones for MarkVision that had "interact with desktop" checked: LexBCE Server ; MarkVision Server and MarkVision Web Server and turned of desktop interaction. Probabably it is not all three services but that is something I'll experiment with at a later date. MarkVision appears to function the same as it ever did and my PC now boots down without hanging up displaying a couple of OleMainThreadWndName messages.

Cheers, Joman

I hope this information is helpful to you. I am pretty sure it is related to your individual problems. I have the problem too. However, based upon the information I have found, it can be from different tasks all causing the same problem.

In a nut-shell, it appears that there may be several services that have the "interact with Desktop" option enabled and that this option may be contributing to your problem. I found the note below on the Cold Fusion web support site and it eludes to this same problem. My recommendation (after you read the note below), is to go through your services (found in NT systems in the control panel click "services" and then click 'startup' for each service to see the options for that service) and look for any services that have "interact with desktop" checked. One of those tasks (if running) is probably the culprit. I imagine you will have to find the guilty party by selectively disabling this option on individual tasks and then trying a shutdown to see if it solved your problem. Apparently this is a known problem as indicated in the note below but I haven't located it on the Microsoft support site yet. I hope this information is helpful to you.....

OLEMainThreadWndName Error on Shutdown

Article 7687

You are receving OLEMainThreadWndName errors when shutting down either ColdFusion Application Server 4.0 or ColdFusion Studio 4.0.

The Microsoft site states the following for the ODBC Desktop drivers version 3.4 "When SQLConnect or QLDriverConnect is called, ODBC DeskTop Drivers initialize OLE using threads that they create internally. As a result of OLE initialization, three hidden windows--DDEServerWindow, OLEChannelWnd, and OLEMainthreadwndname--are created." They also mention the possibility of these windows using up messages and causing other applications to hang. While this issue has been difficult for Allaire to duplicate as it appears to be only certain configurations that produce the error on shutdown, we have found the following workarounds resolve the error.

WorkAround
If your ColdFusion Application Server services are still running under the default System account, setup a new NT user account with Admin priviledges and change your ColdFusion services to logon under this new account. You can do this by going into Control Panel, Services, select each ColdFusion service and click the Startup button. Now, select the Logon As check box and enter your new NT account. An alternative solution is to select 'No' for the 'Interact With Desktop' option for each ColdFusion service.

Do you guys have BMC Patrol loaded on your boxes? If so, do you have the service(s) set to "Interact with the Desktop." I've found that deselecting this option resolves the issue. Good luck!!

I am just getting exactly the same problem (NT4 Workstation with Service Pack 6). Did you get a solution to the problem?
