TAPISRV caused an invalid page fault in module KER Post a Reply
From: Wally on 11/17/2001
I cannot figure out this problem and it's driving me crazy!

After dialing up on my modem, and then disconnecting, the computer soon gives the following message:

TAPISRV caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff9dfff.

Afterward, everything seems fine with the computer.(For instance, I can connect again with no problems.) However, the computer will not shut down properly. It hangs at the "Windows is shutting down" screen. Instead of choosing "Shut Down", however, "Restart" executes with no problem.

I had this problem while running WinME with a PCI Lucent LT Winmodem. I eventually reformatted the hard drive and installed Win98SE and changed the modem to an ISA USRobotics Hardware modem. The same problem soon started. I sometimes do not even have to dial-up. After a reboot, the error sometimes just pops up randomly. Also if some program wants to connect to the internet and the dialup screen appears and I hit Cancel, the error pops up soon afterwards.

I recently installed Virtual Private Networking and now get a similar error upon exiting that:

MPREXE caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff9dfff.

I am not sure, but maybe this is related: A while back, I changed my hard drive to an IBM 75GXP UltraATA100 60GB. I don't think I had the problem with my older HD. I have an ASUS P2B motherboard, which only runs at ATA33 (I think). I will try turning DMA off and see if that fixes the problem. (I would hate to lose DMA though!)

Please Help!
TIA for any suggestions!

I had the same problem which I fixed by reinstalling the Windows Communications utilities and replacing the Secur32.dll file that I think had been added in a security update.
Hope it helps

I received the Tapisrv error after an upgrade of Internet explorer 5.5 SP2. Before uninstalling this version, i tried to renew the telephon.ini but it was no solution. After uninstalling the 5.5 version of IExplorer, it was gone

I have been living with the TAPISRV problem for almost 6 months now. Same general description as all the others. I have re-installed Win 98SE (dirty) and problem remains same. Ihave upgraded to AOL 8.0 - problem remains the same.
I will have the TAPISRV error come to me even though I have never been to the internet that session. After I see the TAPISRV error window and I close it -- I can usually count on flakey operation from that point onward -- so -- now I just reboot whenever it pops up. Eventualyy I am going to get really burned while I am working on something critical -- and lose it because of the TAPISRV problem.

QUESTION ?? Has anyone found fix for it yet.
I have also tried the rebuild of the telephon .ini --- no luck

Unfortunately, Folder Cache 1.6 crashed my machine the moment it installed. Then, after the reboot, it crashed tapisrv all over again.

Very sad.

I eventually tracked this incredibly frustrating problem down to a useful little programme called Folder Cache (1.5 beta). It took me ages to figure it out the source of the problem - it took a reformat of the c drive to get there. After reinstalling Win 98 SE I only slowly reinstalled the full suite of apps I had had before, and when tapisrv crashed shortly after I had reinstalled Folder Cache I knew I was on to something. I immediately uninstalled the programme & haven't had any problems since.

The Folder Cache team have a new version 1.6 available, & I plan to try it out. If Tapisrv crashes, I'll know what my problem is!

I have the same problem as Wally, exactly as he describes it. And, no, Shawn's solution does not work for me.

I have uninstalled Media player altogether, and still Tapisrv crashes. Before that, I tried the fix that Shawn references, and that didn't make a scrap of difference.

In terms of diagnosis, I can report that, when Tapisrv crashes, reported CPU utilisation goes up to 100% and stays there.
