Wild array of errors - possible HD dying or bad ra Post a Reply
From: Greg on 11/27/2001
I have an older P-II 300 on a Gigabyte BX-2000 MB that has recently started giving all sorts of weird unrelated(?) errors. I think I've seen every kind of error out there , so tracking down the cause is difficult, but I think it must be hardware. Here's a few of the dozens of different errors:
Complete system locks at random times.
Fatal exception 0e at 0187:bfb7992f on bootup once.
Explorer page fault at unknown module 000:bfe76dac.
VXD VCACHE errors quite often.
VXD VFAT error on occasion.
VXD AFVXD error on occasion.
Stack oveflow error on startup (once).
IE explorer crashes repeatedly (5.01, 5.5, 6, doesn't matter).
ZoneAlarm crashes often with vsmon faults, or or failures in the rpcrt4.dll or msoss.dll libraries.
Even crashed late into a clean install of Win 98 after formatting partition (multi-boot w/Partition Magic)!
Crashing seems to occur in almost any program, often when nothing significant is even going on.
Virus scanned all with latest NAV definitions.
Ran SiSandra and showed no errors.
Ran different memory diagnostics and found nothing.
Ran all the ATI video diagnostics and found ne errors.

The system has 128 MB of older PC-100 RAM, a 12GB HDD partitioned off into two bootable partitions and one data partition. It also ahs a Ricoh DVD/CD-RW combo drive, and an ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon AGP video card (never a problem with it either). It has the same old ISA sound card and a NIC connected to a cable modem that have always been without problems. Plenty of cooling (cpu temp ~27-32 degrees C). Tried different video drivers, patched & unpatched versions of Win98, all versions of IE, etc. Anyone have an opinion on whether it might be bad ram, MB, hd, or cpu? TIA for any ideas.

I have an ATI Rage II card, and many similar problems, I have had fatal errors during fresh install of windows 98, and many sparatic problems, replace your video card with some other card, not ATI.

I have simular problem.

brian_norman@glis.net

I have somewhat solved it.

This is not a great solution but try and see, at least it is a clue.

You need to tell windows not to fully utilize some of the finer points of your video card.

Right click my computer then make your way to the performance section and then the ideo acceleration sliding bar. I have found success with the second lowest setting of the 4. The first is just to slow and the third did not resolve te problem. This also fixed my Netscape 6.X's display problem. Next I would like to try the windows driver for my ATI video card vs the one I installed from ATI.
