Fatal Exception OE 0187:BFF29CDB and other 0187:BF Post a Reply
From: Deva on 12/07/2001
For about a week I have been having problems with Fatal Exception Errors... I do this for a living and am pretty good at fixing these things. I have a few things left to try but, wanted to put it out here to see if anyone had these.

I will get this error after running well for some time. I have narrowed it down to when I open and use WORDPAD or WORD 2000 while other apps are open.

CONFIGURATION:
Windows 98 SE 512MB PC133 SDRAM AMD Thunderbird 1Ghz @ 266FSB, ASUS K7V133, SB Live Value, Inno3d Tornado Geforce2 MX400 64MB SDRAM, 3COM Network Card, Pegasus Satellite Internet, Quickshot USB Gamepad, Visioneer Scanner, HP DJ935C, ZoneAlarm, Yahoo Instant Messenger, Shuttle 10X DVD-ROM, Updated with latest windows Updates....

I have ran extensive virus scans with latest signature files, scandisk, cleaned TMP files, and searched the web for this particular error.

What I still may do...
Reinstall Office 2000
Reinstall Windows 98 SE then update (not reimage just rerun setup)
If these do not work I will probably end up reimaging my system.

Any ideas?

: Okay, I think I have it solved now... I have had no more problems.

: I tried first updating Office 2000 with Service Pack 1a. After time downloading it fixed the problem but, none of my office apps except Access would stay open longer than 15 seconds... not acceptable.

: I uninstalled Office 2000 completely....

: I reinstalled it from CD and had to respecify which features I wanted to use.

: Good news... everything appears to be working fine. I have had no Fatal Exception errors, GPFs, etc...

: I did not have to rerun windows setup (hate doing cause I have to redo security patches then) and I didn't have to reimage my machine which takes more than a day.

: I hope this helps... if it comes back and I have jumped the gun on assuming my problems are resolved I will come back and let you know.

I am getting the same message as well as invalid page faults in module GDI32.DLL at 0187:bff29cdb. I have reinstalled Win 98SE and am planning to reinstall and update my HP 952C printer drivers as well as PaperPort 7 for my Visioneer Scanner. I am hoping the printer or my new scanner are the only problems.

If you resolved your problem differently, please let me know. Thanks

My computer just started acting up 2 days ago. It started with one freezeup, nothing new to a windows user like myself... thne I started getting blue screens of death, and random reboots. Most my problems happen when useing IE6.0, but it also happens in other programs. a couple times my comp has ever beeped at me, but nothing happend. Im running a Athlon1400, 256x2mb DDR, win98SE. I dont have office or anything, scandisk dont pick up shit, ive allready reformatted my Hard Drive and started over, it kept happening. Im starting to think its a Hardware failure, its either power or ram, either way, its anoying as fuck, if you find a soulution, e-mail me please

jaredsnyder@hotmail.com (also my MSN account)

I consistantly get the same error message at start up. One out of five times windows will start normally. The message always occurs while programs are loading into the system tray. I have been on the phone with the morons at Gateway since before Thanksgiving and they have tried everything. I have replace the cd-rom and the ram. Norton Utilities 2001 found that the ram was bad. It looked like the problem was solved when the the ram was replaced. But then it started again. I have wiped the hard drive, wrote zeros to it and reinstalled windows three times. In conjuction with this error at start-up I first get something to the effect of "the volume that was deleted had open files on it. Next time please check to make sure that it is safe to delete." Push any button and get "The volume that was deleted had data that needed to be purged. Next time please make sure that it is safe to delete." Push any key and get the fatal OE listed here. If it occurs during windows operation, which it has, I just get the fatal OE and then the system crashes. I have a PIII 750, 256 megs 100mhz SDRAM, 30 gig Quantum Fireball HD controled with a Promise 100 card. Oh and the system was perfect until I installed my new Kodak camera software. Unfortunately uninstalling it and doing everything I have listed and more has helped not at all. If anyone has anything new on this post it here. If I figure it out I will let everyone know.

: Okay... it just crashed again and I received the same message I have recently seen listed by others here.
: Fatal Exception OE 0187:BFF9DFFF

: I opened WORD 2000 it requested a virus scan... completed it. I then switched back to Yahoo Instant Messenger and
: YPAGER caused an error. I clicked CLOSE and it brought the Fatal Exception up....

: I pressed a key to get rid of the error.

: YPAGER caused a General Protection Fault in module GDI.EXE @ 0001:0000196F

: I have seen this GPF before after the Fatal Exception and have also had it happen at these addresses.
: Explorer caused a GPF in GDI.EXE @ 0006:0000090C and WORDPAD caused a GPF in GDI.EXE @ 0026:0000066.

: I am running Internet Explorer 6.0.

: It looks like other people may be having problems.
: I am going to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus since I mostly use Housecall @ WWW.TRENDMICRO.COM anyway with the free online virus scan. I will then uninstall MS OFFICE and reinstall it.... If I find a solution I will post it. Any ideas would be appreciated too.

: ALSO: Those of you getting the same error... tell em what Operating System you are running, what Internet Explorer, which Anti-Virus, and if you have Office or Word, and if you have any Instant Messenger programs... maybe we can find out which program is the culprit by sharing information. I think one of these programs may have had a recent update which was not very good to our systems.

I uninstalled Norton Anti-virus 2000.

Word and Word Pad have not caused a Fatal Exception yet but, the second time I opened Word 2000 my machine completely locked up....

I am in the process of downloading and installing every update released for Office 2000.

I suspect some recent update that we have made to one of our programs is causing the problem. NOTE: There was a difference in symptoms once I uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus 2000... maybe a recent signature file caused the problem.
