I had the same problem with a client's laptop. Here is the fix that worked for me for AOL v9.

1.) Uninstall anything Aol
2.) Do a search for aol left residue and delete all files and folders.
2a.) Backup any pertinent aol folder
3.) Repair and clean registry
4.) Reinstall AOL

It seems that there may be an old Macromedia file in a system directory which gets picked up by Windows before a newer version in a different directory.
I roughly followed the instructions at
http://www.macromedia.com/support/director/ts/documents/sw10_restart.htm

by renaming any IML32.DLL and DIRAPI.DLL files to OLD that were in the system32 folder and left the ones in SHOCKWAVE10. There were also some in SHOCKWAVE8 so I renamed them, too.

Cheers.

Okay Everyone I, too have become a recent member of {S AOLFkUp} Anonymous....I have tried endlessly all of the entailed suggestions to correct my WAOL.exe errors but to no avail. Currently on my other PC that holds my AOL 7.0 I just did a complete uninstall of my AOL software & reinserted a AOL 8.0 disc...knowing my pc won't hold AOL's 8.0 version due to a lack of RAM (memory) it will however, reinstall the AOL 7.0 I was using & in doing this I am hoping the WAOL.exe error messages will disappear. Oh, too, BTW, Yes, I did contact AOL Tech last night & even he couldn't fix THEIR WAOL error!!! ;o)

p.s. just went to check on download & it's finished...have to restart my pc now & tell y'all if it worked or not..brb...& the verdict is.....<wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh> my {S AOLFkUp} still !!!! <ughhhhhhhhhhhhh> Any ASSistances @ this point would greatly be appreciated for me too!! *_*)

Usually, a fresh install of AOL will fix any problems related to the program. AOL technicians have disagreed with me in the past but I have fixed many AOL error messages with a reinstall or upgrade. REmember, you can save all your settings a files when you uninstall AOL.

A few thoughts about AOL....

I don't personally use AOL.
I don't, in fact, really like AOL.

Incidentally, some of the people who use this message board USE AOL.

If your comments can provide some technical support for the
users that are having trouble with AOL, then I support your
input and appreciate your effort.

If not, please read on with an open mind.

AOL has managed to offer an internet experience to more of our society than any company besides Microsoft. They have their share
of issues like any other company, and have engineers and staff that
take pride in their work and deserve a little more respect than
most of us often give them.

So, in short, please stop for a moment the next time you feel like
saying something important enough to post, and do the most you can
to benefit those who choose to take the time to read these posts.

I apologize to anyone this message may offend, as it is intended
to be positive, constructive, and in the best interests of all.

p.s. has anyone heard anything about WTF is wrong with AOL?

thanks, ben

I do technical support on a pay per call basis.

For the past two weeks, I have taken HUNDREDS of calls with AOL
related problems. *THIS JUST STARTED RECENTLY*

I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything I can find

Dial up networking
AOL Software
TCP and MS Networking client
Internet Explorer

On some machines, the WAOL.EXE error appears.

On others they can connect after a few dialin attempts,
but NO WEB access is available.

Most of the users have tried to update to AOL 8.0 and can't even get back to a usable version of AOL after trying the upgrade.

P.S. AOL sends these people to us after their techs have taken a crack at fixing it. THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM.

If anyone finds a fix for this, PLEASE post it here.

-ben

I had the same problems with AOL 8.0. I ended up uninstalling the AOL 8.0 and made sure that no other AOL version was loaded. physically deleted all AOL backup files on the C:\ drive. I made a backup of the registry and then went and blew out anything in there that had AOL name with it...be careful doing this...could cause major problems! make sure you backup your registry before deleting ANYTHING! then i went back and reloaded AOL 7.0. Works great now. hope this helps someone. i think i will wait for AOL to fix these problems before i try again. i would suggest anyone loading 8.0 to completely remove 7.0.

I forgot to include the link. Here it is. I believe this explanation came from one of the virus detection software, but I can't remember where I got it from.

I also received an Alert, pop-up type from my Virus software similar to one cited here, saying something like "a malicious script called WAOLdotexe has been detected, do you want to halt it. I said Yes. I went looking for some info about this and found the following link which might be helpful to some. It gives some explanation there. I hope it helps some of you. As far as I know, my virus software halted the problem.

I am the only one in the world having problems with AOL. I (ass)ume that everyone else is happy and having fun with AOL and I am the only one who uses it that has a problem. I won't get rid of it because they charge too much for their worthless service, and so I go on and on for years being stupid and still use AOL like a fool.
Should I ask my shrink why I am so bent on keeping AOL when I know it's a pile of shit? Maybe he knows why they can charge so much and still have customers? Maybe he knows why they can spam me all day long and I still stay. Could it be I am just too lazy to go look in the phone book or on the net for a better ISP?
Can you help me with my mental problems?

I am not sure what version of AOL you are using. However, the file you question is the main launch executable for AOL. I would recommend that you get the most current version of AOL on your computer. If you have Version 7.0, then completely uninstall AOL 7.0 and reinstall the software.

This would probably be the easiest way to fix your problem and you have the option during uninstall to save all of your settings. Therefore, it would take you less time then trying to repair the program.
